Founded in 1901 as the first college on Colorado’s Western Slope, Western Colorado University was established with a liberal arts curriculum focused on training educators. Today, Western upholds its tradition of academic excellence, nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. In addition to a robust liberal arts curriculum, Western offers career-focused programs in fields like engineering, computer, environmental, and other sciences blending these dynamic programs with the adventurous spirit of the region. Here, students dive deep into their studies, gain leadership experience, and embrace the thrill of exploration in western Colorado.

With an enrollment around 3,400 and an average class size of just 16 students per faculty member, Western is committed to fostering intellectual maturity and personal growth. Our mission is to prepare students to take on meaningful roles in local, national, and global communities.

By making a planned gift to Western, you will help to sustain the legacy of this historic institution and strengthen the core values of our mission. We are driven by courage, embracing change and acting boldly on our convictions. We prioritize growth through rigorous academic inquiry and civil dialogue, nurturing both emotional maturity and intellectual curiosity. We foster inclusivity, ensuring that everyone in our community feels welcome and valued. We uphold integrity by acting with the highest ethical standards, maintaining personal authenticity, and respecting others. Finally, we practice stewardship in all aspects – environmental, intellectual, social, and fiscal – across of our campus and beyond.

Together, these values create distinctive character that shines through in the unique, rigorous, and immersive education that students and graduates take pride in.
